PREVIOUS EVENTS

On September 11, 2019, it was my pleasure to host this powerful event on raising awareness and advocating for veterans and first responders to have the right to access cannabis and psychedelic-assisted healing. We witnessed the powerful effects that cannabis and psychedelic medicines have on helping these veterans transition from their Post-Traumatic Stress to Post-Traumatic Growth. The Q&A panel featuring Brian Rush (Research Scientist), Debbie O’Neil (Firefighter/Master’s student), and Matt Chorny (Police Officer) was extremely valuable to the dialogue on psychedelic plants and their therapeutic potentials. Each of them shared important stories and information on where they see these psychedelic-assisted therapies for first responders, veterans, and all victims of psychological trauma. Thank you to Mapping The Mind for allowing us to take part in their Psychedelic Science Week, and to makers of From Shock To Awe for allowing us to share their beautiful film.

For future events like this, follow Mapping The Mind for other groups that they are supporting in raising awareness:

About the film:

The documentary centers on veterans, Matt Kahl and Mike Cooley, and their challenging post-war lives, lives shattered by the trauma of war. The vets personally struggle with anxiety, fear, depression, anger, and an overall inability to find an equilibrium in society and with their families. In order to deal with their erratic emotions and haunted state-of-mind, doctors prescribe intense pharmaceuticals with various side effects that bring them face-to-face with death. In response to the negative impact of traditional Western medicine, both vets begin to use cannabis as an alternative. Although beneficial on many levels, our heroes yearn for deeper healing.

An intimate and raw look at the transformational journey of two combat veterans suffering from severe trauma as they abandon pharmaceuticals to seek relief through the mind-expanding world of psychedelics.

Mike and Matt decide to take ayahuasca, an Amazonian brew traditionally used for healing and spiritual insights. These warriors attend a weekend ceremony filled with hope…and fear of the unknown. Rattles shake, bells ring, flutes play, and a campfire crackles…a ceremony is underway. As images of battle consume their minds, the vets reverently drink the bitter brew several times over a weekend, bringing about profound revelations for our weary soldiers.
